Innovative Techniques Used by Eye Surgeons

Eye surgeons can perform a full spectrum of eye care, from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to complex and delicate eye surgery. As medical technology advances, surgeons have access to new techniques for treating various eye conditions. These methods provide different approaches for managing diseases that affect vision. Here is more information about innovative techniques to explore:

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, or MIGS, refers to a group of procedures for treating glaucoma. These surgeries are designed to lower intraocular pressure, which is the pressure inside the eye. High pressure is a typical factor in glaucoma and can lead to damage to the optic nerve.

MIGS procedures typically involve using microscopic equipment and tiny incisions. The goal of a MIGS procedure is to increase the outflow of fluid from the eye. This may help reduce the internal pressure.

Surgeons accomplish this by either bypassing the main blockage point in the eye’s drainage system or by creating a new pathway for fluid to drain. They typically perform these procedures at the same time as cataract surgery, but they are also done as standalone treatments. The specific MIGS technique depends on the individual’s eye structure and the type of glaucoma.

Stent Procedures

Among the available MIGS options are stent procedures. These involve the implantation of a tiny device, a stent, into the eye. The stent’s function is to create a permanent opening that helps fluid drain properly from the eye’s anterior chamber. This process is intended to reduce the intraocular pressure that contributes to glaucoma.

During the procedure, eye surgeons typically make a small incision in the cornea. Using a special applicator, the stent is inserted and placed into the eye’s natural drainage system. The stent creates a small channel for fluid to flow through, bypassing the area of blockage. The implantation of these devices is a delicate process requiring precision.

Trabeculectomy Treatment

Trabeculectomy is another type of surgical treatment for glaucoma. The procedure involves creating a new drainage channel for the fluid inside the eye. The surgeon makes a small flap in the sclera, the white part of the eye. Then, the surgeon creates a new drainage pathway under this flap to allow fluid to flow out of the eye.

The fluid collects in a small reservoir just under the eye’s outer membrane, where it is absorbed into the body’s bloodstream. This rerouting of fluid aims to lower the pressure inside the eye. Compared to MIGS, a trabeculectomy is more involved and generally reserved for cases of moderate to advanced glaucoma or when other treatments do not work.

Glaucoma Laser Surgery

Laser surgery is another approach for managing glaucoma. There are a few different types of laser procedures a surgeon might perform. One procedure targets specific cells in the eye’s drainage system. The laser stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms to improve fluid outflow and reduce intraocular pressure.
